The coarse and fine gravel.

Unlike British greens in which grass is grown on earth, in the Algarve grass is grown on salt free sand. To prevent the sand falling through the gravel we used a semi permeable membrane.

Using the dumpy level  and measuring staff ensured that the tensioned, underpacked fence wire produced a good overall level which we then screeded using a 4 metre aluminium straight edge.

An example of the top mix; and grass seed growth after a few weeks.

The top two or three inches were a mixture of approximately 90% sand and 10% peat.  Interestingly the peat came from Northern Ireland.  After a few weeks the grass had grown fairly patchily and we started to mow.

And the mowing which we cut at first to 12 mm. progressively reducing to the present 5 mm..

A few months of overseeding (seeding over), mowing each day until the final height of 5 mm and we were bowling on the first grass green in Tavira county.
