The ruin was becoming "Casa Amarela" which in Portuguese means "The Yellow House".
And the pool was being thought about..
Resting under night skies like these..
We were given a present of a Dumpy Level and learned to use it. The North West corner was 2.11 metres higher than datum, the North East corner 2.16 metres higher, the South West corner about right and the South East corner had to be built up about half a metre.
This first assessment was of necessity fairly rough but served to give an understanding of just what depths the JCB had to excavate.
The excavations produced rock slabs which we used as the shoulders for the drainage pipes. We then poured a course gravel as infill for the rocks and support for the drainage pipes and added finer gravel over the full 40 x 40 metres which included the ditches and the cement blocks forming the banks. We sunk into the concrete lining of the ditches, hoops of reinforcement which were then used to enable us to tension fence wire for screeding sand and the top 3" of peat, to the final levels. |
